SVHS Students Prepare for Student-Led Conferences

This year transition activities in special education and regular education have merged for Smoky Valley High School students. Every student at SVHS has a Canvas course for their Individual Plan of Study (IPS).

Students complete components of their IPS during seminar class. Seminar teachers and resource teachers collaborate to help students with IEPs complete the components. The contents of the IPS correlate with the transition sections of a student’s IEP.  Students have completed a career interest inventory called Matchmaker, a personality inventory, and a learning styles inventory all on a program called Xello, which many have seen as the yearly transition assessments required on the IEP. The students then complete slides on their assessment results that require research and demonstration of understanding.

At this point in the school year, students have completed several items in their IPS during seminar, some content classes, and their resource time. The next goal will be for them to share their IPS at their student-led conferences the first week of March. These portfolios have allowed students with and without IEPs to take ownership of their transition planning and using the IPS components in their student-led conferences will help them practice self-advocacy as they use it to plan schedules for the next school year and plans for beyond.
